Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has achieved another significant success with its consistent efforts in quality assurance and institutional development in education. Following an evaluation conducted under the Institutional Accreditation Program (KAP) conducted by the Higher Education Quality Board (YÖKAK), OMU has been granted full accreditation for five years.

With a 50-year history, OMU, one of Turkey's most established universities, continues to contribute to scientific, cultural, and social fields while also improving its quality assurance system to international standards. The institutional accreditation process involves comprehensive assessments across a wide range of areas, including education and training, research and development, social contribution, and management systems.

The Institutional Accreditation Program, implemented by the Council of Higher Education (YÖKAK) to strengthen the quality assurance of the Turkish higher education system, provides external evaluation of universities in the areas of education, research and development, social contribution, leadership and governance, and quality management. As part of the program, higher education institutions undergo a comprehensive evaluation process consisting of preliminary visits, field visits, and a total of 46 sub-criteria.

OMU Takes Quality Management to the Institutional Level

As part of this process, the Internal Institutional Evaluation Report (KIDR), strategic plans, academic and administrative unit activity reports, and stakeholder analyses prepared by OMU were shared with the evaluation teams in a transparent and holistic manner. During the site visit, interviews with university administration, quality committees, academic and administrative staff, students, and external stakeholders revealed that the university has internalized a quality management culture at the institutional level.

Following comprehensive assessments, OMU's quality assurance system was deemed sufficient for "full accreditation." Thus, the university was awarded the Institutional Accreditation Certificate, valid for five years.

With this success, OMU has confirmed its quality-focused approach in higher education and solidified its place among the few universities in Turkey that have received full 5-year accreditation.

Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın: "This success is the collective effort of all of us."

OMÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın made the following comments regarding this significant achievement for the university:

"As Ondokuz Mayıs University, we are proud to have successfully completed the Institutional Accreditation process. This document is the result of the understanding of quality that is ingrained in our institutional culture and the harmonious work of all our components. We view quality not merely as a goal, but as a constantly evolving and constantly evolving process. We are committed to quality-oriented progress in education, research, social contribution, and governance. I extend my gratitude to our Quality Commission, academic and administrative staff, students, and all our external stakeholders who contributed to this process."

OMU will further strengthen its quality-focused higher education approach.

With this accreditation, OMU will further strengthen its quality-focused higher education approach and continue to take decisive steps to increase student satisfaction, scientific productivity, and social contribution.

What is institutional accreditation? What advantages does it offer?

Institutional accreditation is an external evaluation process that assesses whether universities in the Turkish higher education system have achieved their goals in the areas of leadership, governance, quality, education, research and development, and social contribution, and certifies the effectiveness of their quality assurance systems. This process is conducted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖKAK) and is evaluated based on universities' institutional capacity, stakeholder engagement, and transparency levels.

Institutional accreditation not only documents the existence of quality systems, but also their effective operation and the integration of a continuous improvement approach into the institutional structure. Full accreditation demonstrates that a university has met all evaluation criteria to a high level and has adopted a student-focused, accountable, and open-minded management approach.

Universities that achieve certification at the end of the accreditation process stand out as institutions that effectively incorporate student feedback into decision-making processes, update their curricula to meet current needs, continuously develop the competencies of their academic staff, and systematically conduct research and social contribution activities.
